Getting The Love You Want: A Guide for Couples

by Harville Hendrix, Ph.D. & Helen LaKelly Hunt, Ph.D.

Harville Hendrix, in partnership with his wife, Helen LaKelly Hunt, developed Imago Relationship Therapy, a process for promoting healing in relationships. Core to this process is the Imago Dialogue, a communication tool which promotes expression of one’s deeper feelings and desires in tandem with listening by one’s partner in a way which provides understanding, empathy and support. Also has an accompanying workbook.

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work

by John Gottman, Ph.D.

This “practical guide from the country’s foremost relationship expert” outlines the essential ingredients for a healthy relationship. Easy to read and includes homework exercises for the couple. Gottman has been researching couples for years in his “love lab,” where he and his team observe couples’ interactions to identify the difference between the masters and disasters of marriage.

Specialty:  Helping Couples Move From Commited Relationship into a Great Marriage

This is a specialty area of my work with couples. While I work with couples at all stages of relationship and marriage, I have particular experience helping couples navigate the important transitions from committed relationship, to engagement, and into the early years of marriage.

Each of these stages brings unique developmental tasks, opportunities, and challenges. My role is to provide the guidance, tools, and support that couples need to navigate these transitions with greater clarity, confidence, and connection.

Three Stages.
Three Developmental Tasks.

Committed Couples    Clarity

Engaged Couples  →  Confidence

Early Married Couples  →  Connection

Committed Couples: Clarity

Couples in committed relationships have often nurtured their initial romantic attraction into a deeper commitment. There are many good things about the relationship, yet something prevents them from moving forward toward engagement or marriage.

Frequently, one or both partners have some understanding of what the obstacle may be, yet they remain stuck in trying to navigate through it. The result can be an impasse, with one or both people hesitant about taking the next step.

This stuckness is often a sign that something deeper—frequently hidden or outside of awareness—is getting in the way. Old wounds, fears, unmet needs, family patterns, or unresolved conflicts can quietly influence the relationship and make it difficult to move forward.

These couples need a process that helps them identify and safely explore these underlying issues. Imago Relationship Therapy provides such a process, creating greater understanding, deeper dialogue, and new possibilities for growth and healing.

The goal is not to convince couples to move forward or to end the relationship, but rather to help them gain the clarity needed to make an informed and intentional decision about their future together.

Engaged Couples: Confidence

Engagement is much more than planning a wedding—it is an opportunity to build a strong foundation for marriage.

Through premarital counseling and The Foundation Workshop, couples identify and affirm the strengths that have brought them together while also developing tools to navigate differences and the normal challenges of married life. By constructing a solid foundation through communication, emotional connection, shared values, and practical relationship skills, couples enter marriage with greater confidence in themselves, their relationship, and their future together.

As part of the premarital process, I utilize the FOCCUS inventory, a research-based assessment designed to help couples explore important areas of their relationship, including communication, conflict resolution, finances, family backgrounds, intimacy, and shared expectations. The inventory helps couples identify both areas of strength and topics that deserve greater attention before marriage.

The goal is not to eliminate every future challenge, but to help couples enter marriage with the confidence, awareness, and tools needed to build a healthy and resilient relationship.

Early Married Couples: Connection

The transition into marriage often brings unexpected challenges. Many of the issues discussed during engagement become the lived reality of everyday married life. Differences in communication, conflict, finances, family relationships, intimacy, and expectations are no longer topics for discussion—they become experiences that couples must navigate together in real time.

In addition, unresolved wounds, family-of-origin patterns, and individual vulnerabilities often emerge within the safety and closeness of marriage. These experiences do not mean something is wrong with the relationship. Rather, they frequently represent opportunities for deeper understanding, healing, and connection.

The arrival of a child is often a particularly significant transition. While the birth of a child may be one of life’s greatest joys, research consistently shows that marital satisfaction often declines during the first year of parenthood. Sleep deprivation, changing roles, increased responsibilities, and reduced time together can place additional stress on the relationship.

The bottom line is that it is far easier to address these challenges before they become entrenched patterns. Research also tells us that couples wait an average of six years after relationship problems begin before seeking therapy—often far longer than necessary.

Early support can help couples understand what is happening, strengthen their connection, and gently guide the relationship back on course before partners grow too distant from one another.
